Fishing on the Gunnison River in Western ColoradoFishing on the Western Slope Colorado

For anglers, the Gunnison River, which runs through Delta, is a Gold Medal River, meaning it offers some of the best trout fishing in the state. The river is home to trophy-sized rainbow and brown trout, making it a bucket-list destination for fly fishing enthusiasts. Other great fishing spots include the Uncompahgre River and nearby Sweitzer Lake, where you can reel in catfish, largemouth bass, and bluegill. Spring through fall is the best time to fish, with ideal conditions peaking from March to November.

Hiking Adventures Nearby

If hiking is on your itinerary, you’ll find stunning trails for every skill level. Some of the best hikes near Delta include:

  • Escalante Canyon – A scenic trail with red rock formations, petroglyphs, and historic homesteads. Best hiked in spring and fall when temperatures are mild.
  • Dominguez Canyon – A must-visit for those who love desert landscapes, waterfalls, and ancient rock art. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable hiking conditions.
  • Grand Mesa – Home to alpine lakes, wildflower meadows, and breathtaking overlooks, this area provides excellent summer hiking opportunities.

Rafting and Water Sports

The Gunnison River is also a prime spot for rafting and kayaking. Sections of the river offer both family-friendly floats and more challenging rapids for experienced rafters. If you’re looking for a laid-back adventure, the stretch near Confluence Park in Delta is great for beginners, while those seeking a thrill can explore sections near Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, which feature Class III-IV rapids.
