Looking for a one-of-a-kind, low stress way to spend the 4th of July weekend? The Western Sky Balloon Festival returns to Delta from July 3–6, bringing hot air balloon magic, community celebrations, and a spectacular fireworks finale to Confluence Park—and it’s just a 10-minute walk from Riverwood Resort.
A Festival Just Steps Away
One of the best parts of staying at Riverwood Resort for the 4th? You can walk to everything. Confluence Park, the heart of the festival, is just half a mile from your riverside hotel room, tent, or RV site. No traffic, no parking stress—just a scenic stroll to balloon launches, food vendors, live music, and fireworks.
This unbeatable proximity makes Riverwood the perfect home base. Enjoy the festivities in the morning, return for a midday nap or riverside lunch, and head back out for the evening glow and fireworks. It’s a relaxed, flexible way to experience one of Delta’s most beloved summer traditions.
The Riverwood Resort is a proud sponsor of the festival. We are hosting our annual low-key firework viewing party with free smores and beverages on the property. Guests are welcome to stop by around 8:30.
Festival Highlights
The Western Sky Balloon Festival is more than just balloons—though those alone are worth the trip! Here’s what’s on tap throughout the weekend:
- Morning Balloon Ascensions: Each morning begins with a spectacular mass ascension at 6:00 am, filling the sky with color as the sun rises over the Gunnison River. Sunday morning features a special patriotic launch honoring first responders and military service members.
- Tethered Balloon Rides: From 7:00 to 8:30 am, guests can take a short, tethered ride in one of the hot air balloons for just $10 per person. Proceeds benefit the Delta Volunteer Fire Department, making it a fun and meaningful way to support the community.
- Family Fun All Day: On July 4, Confluence Park transforms into an all-ages playground. There’s a pancake breakfast, a festive parade, mud volleyball, bounce houses, a mechanical bull, craft vendors, lawn games, and plenty of local food and drink options—including a lively beer garden.
- Balloon Glow & Fireworks: The day ends with a stunning balloon glow at 8:30 pm, where grounded balloons light up in sync with music, followed by a 9:45 pm fireworks show over the water. It’s a can’t-miss Delta tradition and the perfect way to cap off your holiday.
Tips for the Best Experience
- Arrive Early for the Balloons: Balloon liftoffs happen early, and they’re weather dependent. Plan to arrive at the park by 5:45 am for the best views and photo ops. Bring coffee, a blanket, and settle in to watch the sunrise sky fill with color.
- Bring Cash: Many vendors at the festival—including those offering tethered rides, food, and crafts—prefer cash, so come prepared.
- Wear Layers & Sunscreen: Mornings in Delta can be cool, but the sun gets strong quickly. A hat, water bottle, and light layers will go a long way.
- Stay Hydrated & Take Breaks: Luckily, you’re staying just minutes away at Riverwood Resort—so head back to your room or shady patio whenever you need a break from the action.
- Tag Your Photos: Be sure to share your festival moments on Instagram and tag @riverwoodinndelta—we love to see your shots of the balloons, fireworks, and fun!
